From the very start of our Leigh's Workshop journey our mantra has been to make unique creations that customers couldn't find elsewhere. We have achieved this through various methods combining our woodworking skills & equipment, our small CNC cutter & powerful laser cutters/engravers to hopefully produce some new & exciting products that our customers love
Mixing materials
Rather than just laser cutting & engraving a basic product we have mixed materials such as painted MDF, plywood, acrylic, real wood & other more unusual materials such as plastic pipe & conduit to enhance our designs.
We have an extensive range of signs that use a thick solid plywood varnished or painted back with laser engraved words added to complete the design, in some cases even offering our own cut veneer of hardwood to make the signs really stand out.
Many of our extensive range of Sci-fi panels feature acrylic mixed with laser cut acrylic 'buttons, screens' & lights' and this is also where we use the plastic pipe & conduits to really help sell the design.
We also have many framed designs that use solid wood and we produce all of our frames in house so fit our designs.
3D layering of material
Another technique which we use to set our designs apart is how we layer the laser cut materials to give a 3D effect which many of our designs benefit from. In many cases we use it to make the lettering on signs stand out such as on our various gym signs, hobby signs or kitchen & laundry signs.
We also frequently use this again on our Sci-fi designs to really create a look that doesn't look flat or boring but dynamic & real.
Building around a box
Some of our more unusual Sci-fi designs actually start out as a simple laser cut box and we then design panels to apply to the box sides. This gives us the opportunity to make a truly 3 dimensional control panel that can stand out quite e few centimetres from the wall or in some cases freestanding display pieces.
Design
I think that in many cases what sets us apart is our use of unique designs that you won't find elsewhere. One hobby of mine for many years has been scale modelling and I have been able to use this to create scales up or down versions of everyday items such as retro cassette tapes, gym signs, camera shutters, car wheels, oak barrel ends and many more.
At Leighs Workshop we are constantly looking for new ways to use our skill set to create ever more unique designs that we hope will continue to set us apart and that our customers will love
